Following our recent discussion on how to support teams in becoming more proactive, our next pressing question comes from a familiar challenge many of you are navigating: quiet quitting.
Quiet quitting happens when employees don’t officially leave—but mentally and emotionally, they’ve checked out. They do the bare minimum to keep their jobs, which can lead to significant hidden costs to organizations.
What makes this issue especially challenging is that traditional management tools (i.e., "carrots and sticks") are increasingly ineffective, especially with younger workers. Many no longer prioritize promotions (carrots) or fear job loss (sticks) in the same way previous generations did. Instead, they’re driven by meaning and purpose in their work.
That’s why we suggest a different approach.
Below is a short video from our manager playbook on Quiet Quitting, introducing our strategy for re-engaging employees by reconnecting their daily tasks to shared values and a sense of mission. It all starts with a conversation: What do we do, and why does it matter?
