Since the pandemic, it’s become much more common to recognize the importance of supporting employee mental health. This support is still needed as we live in these uncertain times.
Did you know there is also a clear return on investment (ROI) for supporting employee mental health:
- A Deloitte Canada study found that companies with mental health programs in place for at least one year achieved a median annual ROI of CA$1.62 for every dollar invested.
- For programs running three years or more, the median ROI increased to CA$2.18 per dollar.
- Positive ROI is more likely when investments focus on high-impact areas like leadership training, return-to-work programs, and proactive mental health promotion.
The Cost of Doing Nothing Is High
- Disability Claims: In Canada, mental health issues account for 30–40% of short-term disability (STD) claims and 30% of long-term disability (LTD) claims.
- Productivity Loss: Globally, depression and anxiety result in the loss of 12 billion working days annually, costing the world economy approximately $1 trillion each year.
- Presenteeism: In the UK, presenteeism—employees working while unwell—has led to a significant financial impact, with costs to employers reaching up to £45 billion a year.
That’s a pretty compelling return on investment. But here’s the catch—most organizations stop at offering an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and think they’ve done enough.
They haven’t.
EAPs are reactive, underused (utilization rates average under 10%), and often don’t address the day-to-day leadership skills needed to prevent burnout, disengagement, and conflict in the first place.
