How do you lead when two workplace cultures clash?

Dr. Dayna Method/Workplace Culture/How do you lead when two workplace cultures clash?

Here’s a public question we recently received through our People Problems initiative:

“My company recently merged with another company. It wasn’t a hostile takeover—we all agreed to partner together. But now that we’re working together, I’m seeing behaviours in the other team that I just don’t agree with. For example, they keep all their office doors locked, which means sometimes we can’t access the files we need. Our team never does this. It seems like a minor issue, but it’s reflective of a lot of deeper differences in how we work. It’s starting to create tension. What do I do about this as a leader?”

This is a common challenge that gives us a great opportunity to talk about workplace culture—and how to be intentional in shaping it.

In our Workplace Culture video series, part of the Manager Toolkit, we help leaders:

- Understand what culture really is and why it matters
- Explore different types of workplace culture and the role of psychological safety
- Learn how to guide meaningful conversations with their teams

In the short video below, we define workplace culture, share a few memorable examples, and highlight why even seemingly small habits or rituals can have a lasting impact on team dynamics.
